In these crazy times I am seeing a lot of people gaining weight due to stress eating. Even though my husband wants to lose weight, sometimes it is easy to use stress as an excuse to eat outside of our normal healthy eating plans. I have been working extra hard lately to create plant-based, nutritious, flavorful meals for our family during quarantine. You too can use this as a chance to recommit yourself to healthy eating.
Clean eating is a way of life and not just a temporary diet. It’s easy to veer away from the things you know are best for you though, just like you may stop reading your scriptures everyday even though you know it is good for you. Here are some tips on how to get back on track when you have been derailed from eating clean, for any reason. This is a no judgement post because we all lose our way because we are human.
Cut Yourself Some Slack and Adjust Your Plan
Everyone slips up every now and then. If you find yourself indulging in self-loathing after falling off track with your clean eating, it is time to stop. Think of all the things you do right, and go from there. Choose to love and respect yourself even when you are not perfect.
Maybe your plan just isn’t working well for you. Are you restricting yourself too much? Do you feel like you are depriving yourself? Are you skipping meals when you really need nourishment? Maybe your girls night out tempts you to eat poorly or over indulge. Take each failure as an opportunity to reassess what you are doing, and whether or not it is working. Reflect on how you can make things better and make adjustments.
List the Reasons You Love Eating Clean
Sometimes you just miss your old way of eating. When you stop to think about it, though, the benefits you get from eating well far outweigh the momentary pleasure you get from eating junk food. Sit down and list the benefits you get from clean eating. Do you feel proud of your new size of jeans or amount of energy? Do you know you are decreasing your risk of cancer, blood pressure problems, or chronic disease? Write it down so you can see what you really get from eating well.
Compare how you feel when you are eating clean, and when you are not. Maybe you wake up feeling ready to tackle life with a clean-eating diet, whereas you feel like you cannot get out of bed when you are eating junk. Go through every aspect of your life and compare that aspect when it comes to a clean-eating day versus a day filled with unhealthy choices. You will soon realize how many areas of your life that your eating habits affect.
Your eating habits are only part of the story. Another major part is exercising. Even if you feel like your life has temporarily fallen apart when it comes to how you eat, you can keep control of exercising daily and putting in your best effort. The endorphins you feel after exercising will give you a boost and can help you get back on track with your program.
Eating right is not always easy. There will be events, holidays, and even friends who tempt you to stop putting in the effort you deserve to give to yourself and your body. Put these tips into action, and get back on track with clean eating.
