In this crazy world it may feel like your back is against the wall and you just keep failing. Sometimes that is true. However, what you make of your failures is what’s important. If Thomas Edison had stopped the first time he failed at making a light bulb we wouldn’t be nearly as far as we are today. I want to talk about some household “failures” that you can turn into other things to make your life a little brighter.
#1: Bread that didn’t rise
Maybe you are new to baking or maybe you just forgot to proof your yeast before adding it to your dough. Whatever the reason, sometimes the bread doesn’t do what you want it to. Rather than baking a hard as a rock loaf of bread try adding some things to make it into something else. Can you make banana bread with it? What about applesauce muffins? I did this recently with a loaf of gluten free bread dough that didn’t do its thing. I was trying a new recipe with substitutions so I take full responsibility for why it didn’t work, but I still was able to make some delicious muffins with it.
#2: Main dishes gone wrong
This one is a little harder because I can’t tell you exactly what to do with every single recipe fail. Some are so far gone that they get recycled as goat or chicken food. Most can be made into something perfectly edible, though. I made vegetable biryani the other day that didn’t taste quite right. With some new mexican spices and tomatoes it became great taco filling. The chicken that was too dry to serve with mashed potatoes took on new life with some BBQ sauce added. The manicotti that fell apart before I could fill it made a great cheesy pasta. Always ask yourself how you could repurpose before you throw it away.
#3: Pudding or filling that didn’t set
Heat it up and add a thickener like grass fed gelatin or chia seeds. I have done this with pudding, jam, pie filling, etc. that didn’t set up the way I wanted it to and no one is the wiser. Sure chia seeds are visible but some people add them to desserts on purpose for texture. I would not recommend using flax seeds as they are very visible and not in a good way.
In a world where there is so much food waste please take a few minutes to see if you can salvage your food before tossing it in the garbage. Oftentimes you will find you can create a wonderful dish by adding a few things and repurposing your recipe. Have fun creating!
